The migrants arriving this year in the Canary Islands, 31,887, already exceed the number of the cayucos crisis of 2006

LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, Nov. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) -

A total of 31,887 migrants have arrived irregularly to the Canary Islands until this Saturday, November 4, which exceeds the figure of 31,678 who arrived in the archipelago aboard boats or canoes in the so-called canoe crisis of 2006.

In this sense, the balance of the Ministry of the Interior as of October 31, 2023 indicated that until that day there were 30,705 migrants who had arrived to the islands, which was 111.2% more than the same figure from the previous year.

Furthermore, according to data compiled by Europa Press, in the first four days of November, 1,182 people have been rescued at sea aboard eleven irregular vessels.

Only in the early hours of this Saturday, Maritime Rescue and the Civil Guard rescued four canoes in waters near El Hierro that were transporting 739 people, among whom there were four deaths and twelve people who were taken to the island's hospital.

In 2023, not only has the number of migrants been exceeded, but also the history of people traveling in the same canoe. It was last October 21 when a boat was intercepted on the island of El Hierro with 320 people, above the previous record of 271 individuals that also took place this year, specifically on October 3.
