The industry cut its sales by 2.8% in May and chains two months in negative

The turnover of the industry fell by 2.8% last May compared to the same month in 2022, mainly due to the decline in sales of energy and intermediate goods, which decreased by 39, 8% and 10.9%, respectively, according to data released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the year-on-year decrease in May, industry turnover chains two months with negative rates, after breaking in the month of April (-8.1%) with a streak of 25 consecutive months of year-on-year increases.

Together with energy and intermediate goods, which led the setbacks in industrial billing, durable consumer goods also decreased their sales (-3.4%), compared to the increase experienced by capital goods (20.8%) and non-durable consumer goods (9.4%).

The branches where sales increased the most compared to May 2022 were shipbuilding, railways, aeronautics and space and combat vehicles (55.3%), and the manufacture of consumer electronics, optical instruments and photographic equipment (37.3%), while the biggest year-on-year cuts in turnover were recorded by coke ovens and petroleum refining (-39.8%) and the chemical industry except cleaning and polishing items, perfumes and cosmetics (-28 ,1%).

Corrected for the calendar effect and seasonality, the turnover of the industry decreased by 3.6% in May with respect to the same month of the previous year, a rate 1.5 points lower than that of April.

SALES RISE 1.3% IN THE MONTH

In monthly terms (May over April) and seasonally and calendar-adjusted data, the industry increased its sales by 1.3%, the largest increase in this monthly rate since November 2022.

Four of the five sectors presented positive rates in their sales in May in the monthly rate, with increases of 8% in capital goods, 1.6% in non-durable consumer goods, 0.7% in durable consumer goods, of 0.2% in intermediate goods, while energy registered a decrease of 7%.

The activities that increased their sales the most compared to April in the seasonally adjusted series were the manufacture of other transport material (17.7%) and the manufacture of vehicles, computer, electronic and optical products (7.2%), while the The largest monthly cuts were registered in coking plants and petroleum refining (-6.8%), other extractive industries (-3.9%) and the manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (-1.7%).

SALES DECREASE IN 12 AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES

The turnover of the industry increased last May in five autonomous communities in the interannual rate, while it decreased in the other 12 remaining, with Murcia leading the decreases, where it fell by 22%.

The greatest increases occurred in Madrid (21.7%), Navarra (14.6%) and Castilla y León (12.8%). The most pronounced decreases were registered, in addition to Murcia (-22%), in Asturias (-17.7%), Andalucía (-12.9%), Cantabria (-11.1%), Comunidad Valenciana (-9, 4%) and the Basque Country (-9.2%).
