The Government is committed to approving the Sustainable Mobility Law in February in the Council of Ministers

Minister Puente commits to reactivate the processing of the Accident Investigation Authority

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has confirmed that the Council of Ministers will re-approve the Sustainable Mobility bill in February, with the intention of it coming into force before the end of the year.

"We cannot delay any longer such a necessary legislative initiative, which we also have a commitment to approve with the European Union this year," explained Puente during his appearance in Congress to explain the general lines of his department during the legislature.

And the rule was already approved in the last legislature, the deadline for presenting amendments to the articles in Congress was even closed. However, the advance of the elections and the consequent dissolution of the Cortes did not allow its processing to be completed.

Something that also happened with the bill for the creation of the Independent Administrative Authority for the technical investigation of railway, maritime and civil aviation accidents and incidents. Puente has also committed to reactivating the approval of this regulation.

"They will come exactly as they were in the previous mandate, therefore the degrees of consensus agreement, as well as the discrepancy that existed at that time, are those that will exist at the beginning of the processing of both texts," the minister assured.

The head of Transport, however, has invited the different parliamentary groups to participate in a dialogue process in the drafting of these laws. "My door is open," Puente said.

GOAL: DECARBONIZE TRANSPORTATION

It was in the Sustainable Mobility Law where Unidas Podemos registered an amendment to replace short flights with a rail alternative. This regulation aimed to decarbonize transport in Spain, responsible for 27% of greenhouse gases.

For its part, the idea of the Independent Accident Investigation Authority aims to clarify the causes and prevent their recurrence, so that recommendations are proposed that improve safety.

Specifically, the institution would unite the functions of the Railway Accident Investigation Commission, the Permanent Maritime Accident and Incident Investigation Commission, and the Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission.
