The Government distributes the annual percentage of fish catches for scientific purposes

The General Secretariat for Fisheries, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has distributed the percentage of fishing catches for scientific purposes for the year 2023, from which 14 vessels that will carry out authorized research campaigns will benefit.

In a resolution published this Monday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the Ministry attributes the amounts of catch to each of the vessels that submitted the request and the study of the campaigns to be carried out in a timely manner.

The resolution is based on the provisions of a ministerial order that regulates access to these percentages, as well as the criteria for setting them within the framework of authorized scientific campaigns.

Thus, as reported by the Ministry, the amounts corresponding to the Northwest Cantabrian national fishing grounds of horse mackerel, hake, monkfish, roosters, blue whiting, mackerel and Norway lobster have been distributed, without exceeding 2% of the quota assigned to Spain for these species, which is the maximum percentage for scientific capture allowed by community regulations.

In the case of those other 'stocks' that have not been distributed because applications have not been submitted, the ministerial order establishes the possibility that they may be granted throughout the year, upon presentation of the corresponding documentation. Likewise, a review of the use of this scientific catch and its possible redistribution is foreseen.

"Scientific research campaigns are a reflection of the commitment between the fishing and scientific sectors to advance in the best knowledge and have information that allows the best decisions to be made in terms of fisheries management", stressed the Ministry, which recalls that these campaigns They are voluntary and designed by scientific institutes.
