The plenary session of the European Parliament approved this Thursday a resolution that defends the right of women to decide about their sexual and reproductive health and calls on governments to take the necessary steps so that the right to a "safe and legal" abortion is enshrined. in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

The position of the European Parliament, which is not the first time it has spoken along these lines, has come forward with the support of the social democratic, liberal, left and green groups, although it has also had votes from the European People's Party (EPP). , which on this occasion has voted divided.

Among the Spanish MEPs, the votes in favor are those of the PSOE, Unidas Podemos, PNV, Junts, ERC and part of the Ciudadanos delegation, while the PP, Vox and the MEPs of Ciudadanos José Ramón have voted against the resolution. Bauzá and Susana Solís.

The European Parliamentary resolution condemns the rollback of women's rights and all attempts to restrict or eliminate existing protections for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender equality globally, including in Member States of The EU.

For this reason, it is committed to amending Article 3 of the European Charter to declare that "everyone has the right to physical autonomy and free, informed, full and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as to all rights." related health services, including access to safe and legal abortion, without discrimination.

MEPs also call on governments to fully decriminalize abortion in line with the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and to remove and combat obstacles to abortion.

Likewise, they warn that doctors and even entire medical institutions in EU countries refuse to perform abortions based on "conscience" clauses that are exercised even in situations where delaying the interruption of pregnancy can put health or safety at risk. patient's life.

Other keys to the European Parliament resolution are to demand that the European Union not finance organizations that fight against equality and women's rights, that abortion be fully decriminalized in all EU countries (it is an exclusively national competence ) and to invest in quality education and assistance.
