The Algerian authorities detain twelve people for the fires that caused at least 40 deaths

MADRID, 28 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Algerian authorities have arrested twelve people on Thursday accused of causing some of the fires that have plagued the country in recent days and which have resulted in the death of at least 40 people.

Despite the arrest of these suspected arsonists, "it is almost certain that another part (of the fires) is due to other natural or human factors, such as extremely high temperatures, negligence, lack of resources, non-compliance with precautionary regulations, lack of of cleaning the environment of houses, agglomerations...", reported the Algerian agency TSA.

"Climate change is a reality that Algeria must take into account in everything it does now. One of the direct consequences of global warming is precisely these repeated and large fires," the agency added.

A total of 97 almost simultaneous fires have killed 40 people, the majority in the province of Bejaia and Toudja, and among which are ten soldiers, in addition to calcining "thousands of hectares."
