Madrid, May 7, 2023. The Spanish Motocross Grand Prix held this weekend at the intu Xanadú international circuit in Arroyomolinos threatened to be one of the most special in history and it did not disappoint. Jeffrey Herlings surpassed Stefan Everts' record this Sunday by achieving his 102nd victory in a grand prix. It interrupted the party of the Spanish fans, who surely preferred to see theirs at the top, but it made them live a historic moment in this sport. Despite everything, the red plate stays at home. Jorge Prado leaves Madrid maintaining a six-point lead over Herlings in the standings. The icing on the cake was put by Rubén Fernández who got on the podium in third place in the drawer.

There were many sleeves to be played on the big day of the competition. The Women's World Cup was one of the first to be resolved. The New Zealand Courtney Duncan, returned to prevail despite the efforts of the rivals. She once again was the fastest and she managed to get away from the start, keeping a comfortable distance from the others, which allowed her a quiet victory. She shot out Gabriela Seisdedos, placing third before the first corner, ahead of her teammate Daniela Guillén. The one from Lloret de Mar fought the whole sleeve to not get off the drawer in the general calculation of the weekend and she succeeded. Although she could not celebrate a first position, she has managed to take second place in the World Cup and escape from her rivals. The fans turned to the two national pilots, who flooded the paddock in red in celebration of Daniela's podium at the Spanish Grand Prix. “We are happy with the work of the weekend and with the enormous support of the fans. It has been a good result and we continue looking at the general classification of the World Cup”, declared Guillén.

It was time for the star categories of the weekend. In MX2 Simon Laengenfelder took victory in both sleeves, his first double of the year. Jago Geerts finished second, but maintains the MX2 lead. Regarding the Spanish riders, Oriol Oliver achieved eleventh position and David Braceras finished fifteenth. Good result for the locals who maintained the level against their rivals.

MXGP: Herlings and the Spanish

Jeffrey Herlings was clear: he was going to beat the legendary Everts. The Dutchman did not start in first position in any of the sleeves, but he climbed in both until he managed to take first place. Jorge Prado fought to give his best in front of his fans on a track that he loves, although he did not achieve the result he worked for all weekend. Of course, he made the fans vibrate until he lowered the checkered flag. “The atmosphere has been incredible and it is always a pleasure to race at home. It is a pity not to have finished on the podium, but the important thing is that we are leaving with the red plate for France”, he declared at the subsequent press conference. Rubén Fernández did not want to miss the celebration either. The Honda rider signed an incredible start, placing himself in first position and taking the Holeshot of the second race (in the first race he had been fifth). He only managed to snatch the victory from an unstoppable Jeffrey Herlings. Mattia Guadagnini was able to celebrate his first podium on this occasion, with a hard-fought second place. “I have felt very good all weekend. You have to continue like this. This is the right path”, declared the Italian. Fernández wanted to make a special mention of his podium: “It is the first time at home in a World Cup. It is a unique feeling. The fans have made us feel their warmth at all times and the truth is that it has been very exciting”.

The final sleeves of the European 250 and the electric junior were also disputed. Among the smallest, Timoteï Cez repeated the victory. While in the 250 cc category, Cas Valk took the second round, ahead of Kay Karssemakers and Karlis Alberts Reisulis.
