Spain temporarily closes its Embassy in Khartoum (Sudan) for security in the midst of the armed conflict

MADRID, 17 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Spain has temporarily closed its Embassy in the capital of Sudan as the city currently does not meet minimum security conditions due to the armed conflict unleashed between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has already cost dozens of deaths since it broke out on Saturday.

In a brief text on social networks, the embassy has published that the agency will remain closed until further notice and has asked Spanish citizens in the city to remain at home and avoid traveling abroad. An emergency number has also been provided.

At least 83 civilians have died in Sudan since the outbreak last Saturday of fighting between the Sudanese Army and the RSF paramilitaries in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country, as confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The chaotic information about the conflict is increasingly difficult to obtain due to numerous internet blackouts across the country. The MTN operator, one of the most important in Sudan, has announced this morning the suspension of its service by order of the country's National Telecommunications Authority, according to a statement collected by the 'Al Hadath' channel.

This comes after the Rapid Support Forces categorically denied a statement from the Sudanese Army announcing the conquest of paramilitary bases in seven locations in the country -- Port Sudan, Kasala, Gedaref, Damazin, Kosti, Kadugli and Karar -- as well as the death of RSF commanders in North Darfur and West Darfur.
