Spain remains out of the top eight again for the third consecutive edition of the World Cup

MADRID, 6 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish soccer team fell in the round of 16 of a World Cup for the fourth time in its history, after the defeat on Tuesday against Morocco in a penalty shootout, in their corresponding duel of the second phase of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

The Spanish team once again said goodbye to a World Cup event in the first meeting, as they did in the previous World Cup held in Russia in 2018, when they were defeated by the hosts, also in a penalty shootout and after drawing a goal.

In this way, Spain continues without being among the eight best in a World Cup since its historic victory in South Africa in 2010, and crashed for the fourth time in its history in the round of 16. In addition to the event in Russia, Spain did not overcome the first World Cup toss-up in Italy'90, when they fell 2-1 after extra time against Yugoslavia and neither in Germany 2006, victim of France 3-1.

After this elimination, the statistics in Luis Enrique Martínez's qualifying matches is two victories, against Croatia in the round of 16 of Euro 2020 and against Italy in the semifinals of the 'F4' of the League of Nations 2021, three draws (that of this Tuesday against Morocco and against Switzerland and Italy in the EURO quarterfinals and semifinals), and a defeat (against France in the 2021 League of Nations final).
