The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, confirmed this Tuesday that he will meet with the former Catalan president and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont and also with the leader of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, after having agreed on an Amnesty Law to benefit those involved. in the process with both independence parties.

He also rules out that there will be a negative electoral cost for the PSOE and gives the example of the last legislature in which it approved pardons for the convicted separatist leaders. Despite the criticism, the PSOE improved its results and in the July 23 elections it obtained a million more votes than in the previous general elections, as noted.

This was stated by Sánchez himself in an informal conversation with journalists at the traditional meeting with the press in Moncloa at the end of the year. The head of the Executive has not given dates for the meetings, which will be held separately, although he says that he prefers that the meeting with Puigdemont take place once the Amnesty Law is approved, which has already begun its process in The congress.

Sánchez has also assured that there will be photos of these meetings and considers that it is a consistent step with the negotiation process that has begun with these political forces, with which the PSOE sealed agreements to ensure support for the investiture of the socialist leader.

Until now, Sánchez had not openly admitted that a meeting with Puigdemont would take place, despite the fact that Junts took it for granted and last Thursday the general secretary, Jordi Turull, publicly said that this meeting would take place. At that moment Sánchez limited himself to saying that that meeting was not on his agenda.

As Turull then advanced, the meeting with Puigdemont would take place outside of Spain - Puigdemont still has pending cases with the Spanish Justice - and the international mediator that the PSOE agreed to incorporate to supervise the negotiations between the socialists and Together.

Sánchez has not spoken of specific dates, although he does specify that he prefers to sit down with the leader of Junts once the Amnesty Law is approved. Once the rule comes into force, it is foreseeable that Carles Puigdemont will no longer have pending charges in court and would no longer be considered a fugitive.

The law passed its first examination in the Lower House this December with 178 votes in favor and will begin its processing in the Congressional Justice Commission in January.

The objective of the socialists is to speed up the deadlines for the law to reach the Senate in February and as the PP plans to extend the deadlines in the Upper House to the maximum of two months allowed by the Magna Carta, it is not expected to be in force before of May.

He also points out that he will not hold a meeting with Puigdemont and Junqueras, but that there will be many meetings with both because he thinks he is on a path towards the normalization of these political actors and therefore he thinks it is logical to hold these meetings.
