Sánchez supports Guterres after appealing to Article 99 of the UN Charter to warn of the situation in Gaza

MADRID, 7 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has conveyed his support to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, after he invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, thus alerting the Security Council of the situation in the Middle East and urging the body to "put pressure" to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

"I have just spoken with the Secretary General of Antonio Guterres to convey my full support for the invocation of article 99 of the Charter of the United Nations," the head of the Executive announced in a message published on the social network Press, who has said he shares the "feeling of alarm" at the suffering of the civilian population

Sánchez has reiterated the Spanish Government's condemnation of Hamas terrorism and, "with the same force", as he wrote, demands that International Humanitarian Law "be respected." "The international community cannot remain passive in the face of the unbearable suffering of the civilian population in Gaza. The Security Council must act and demand a humanitarian ceasefire," she demanded.

The president has also defended the need to "give a serious and credible perspective of peace" through "a political process based on the materialization of the two-state solution."

Previously, Guterres has also reiterated once again his call for a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). "It is urgent. The civilian population must be saved from further harm," the Secretary General stressed in a letter published by the UN, where he also highlighted the collapse of the health system in the Palestinian enclave. "Hospitals have become battlefields," he says.

This is the first time that Guterres, the highest representative of the UN since 2017, calls for Article 99, which states that "the Secretary General may draw the attention of the Security Council to any matter that in his opinion may jeopardize the maintenance of international peace and security".
