Russia Releases Video Of Former US Marine Paul Whelan In Prison

MADRID, 30 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian media have published a video of Paul Whelan, the former US Marine sentenced to 16 years in prison in Russia on espionage charges, showing a day of the detainee in a Russian prison.

Whelan appears in the video telling the reporter that he "can't do an interview" because he "can't answer any questions." He is also seen eating at a diner and doing a sewing activity.

After the publication, Paul's brother, David Whelan, who has assured that the shots were taken in the month of May and that the prison staff "retaliated against him for not having participated", has indicated that "it was the first time" seeing his brother since June 2020.

"I would like to see Paul in better circumstances, but it's been good to see him again and see the fight remain in his eyes. It's good to know that Paul remains unfazed," added David Whelan.

This same month, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, spoke by phone with the former US marine to tell him that the Joe Biden Administration "is doing everything possible to bring him home as soon as possible," according to a family source told the CNN television network.

Whelan, who holds a US, Canadian and British passport, was detained in December 2018 at a Moscow hotel by Federal Security Service (FSB) agents. According to Russian Intelligence, he was found with an external memory device containing classified information.

The 50-year-old former US Marine claims he was set up. According to his version, the 'pendrive' was given to him by a Russian acquaintance and he believed it contained vacation photos.
