RSF leader and Guterres stress the need for a complete ceasefire in Sudan

MADRID, 22 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, spoke this Saturday with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, about the deterioration of the political and humanitarian situation in Sudan, and they agreed on the need for a complete ceasefire and offer protection to humanitarian and medical workers.

"Today I received a phone call from the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, during which we discussed all the issues related to the current crisis, in light of the humanitarian truce, and the importance of opening safe passages for citizens and residents and facilitate their circulation to obtain possible assistance", Dagalo published on his Twitter account.

The general thanked Guterres for "his sharpness and interest in the security and stability of Sudan", and has asked the UN for more efforts in humanitarian aspects to "mitigate" the effects of the crisis on the civilian population.

The Sudanese Army announced this Friday that it was accepting the three-day truce offered by the RSF on the occasion of the end of Ramadan, but a few hours after this announcement both contenders have once again accused each other of violating the announced truce.

The hostilities broke out last Saturday in the context of an increase in tensions around the reform of the security apparatus and the integration of the paramilitary force -- led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias 'Hemedti', who is also vice president of the Council Transitional Sovereign-- within the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition.
