Reynders will tell PSOE and PP that he hopes both for the unblocking of the CGPJ and for the reform of the election system

BRUSSELS, 29 Ene. (EUROPE PRESS) -

The Commissioner of Justice, Didier Reynders, hopes not to have to exhaust the two-month period that he has given to PSOE and PP to mediate in the negotiations that will allow the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) to be unblocked, a task for which On Wednesday in Brussels, he summoned the two parties to a first meeting in which he will recall that the recommendations of the European Commission call for the renewal of the governing body of judges but also the reform of its election system.

"What we are going to ask for is the implementation of the recommendations of the report on the rule of law. In the report we ask to apply European standards in the composition of the general councils of justice and, in Spain in particular, also to reform it. Not only rebuild it but rather reform it," Reynders summarized when asked by the press about what he expects from Wednesday's meeting.

The commissioner sent a letter last Friday to the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, and the Deputy Secretary of Institutional Affairs of the PP, Esteban González Pons, to inform them that he accepted the request to be a facilitator in the negotiations and proposed to This will establish a "structured dialogue" that should lead to solutions within two months.

In this context, Reynders has reiterated, as he did last Friday, that the first step "for things to change" is for an "internal process" to take place in Spain where it is the political formations that "have to move " and "seek a sufficient majority" that allows "to renew the CGPJ and undertake the reform."

According to what Bolaños said in statements on Friday, in the meeting with Reynders and González Pons he will defend that what is "urgent" is the renewal of the governing body of the judges and that "once it has been renewed" they will be able to "talk about other matters." The PP, however, advocates undertaking the two processes in parallel.

In the recommendations for Spain that the European Commission has included in its report on the rule of law for 2022 and 2023, the priority issue is to renew the CGPJ and "immediately afterwards" address the reform of the system and these recommendations will be the basis of the mediation that Reynders wants to play.
