Non-hotel overnight stays grew by 9.1% up to June, exceeding those of 2019 by 7.4%

MADRID, Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) - Overnight stays in Spanish non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) grew by 9.1% during the first six months of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year . They also exceed those of the six months of 2019 by 7.4%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) made public this Tuesday.

The occupancy survey in non-hotel tourist accommodation (EOAT) shows that these overnight stays in Spain fell by 3% last June compared to the same month in 2022. Those of residents fell by 8.6%, while those of non-residents increased 2.6%.

The average stay in June was 3.8 overnight stays per traveler.

Of the 13.1 million overnight stays registered last June, 6.2 million were residents of Spain, 3.9 million EU citizens and 3 million from the rest of the world.

In addition to the 3.4 million travelers staying in non-hotel collective tourist establishments, the majority, some 2 million, were residents of Spain, some 813,477 from the EU and another 636,067 from the rest of the world.

OVERNIGHT STAYS IN APARTMENTS ARE DOWN.

Overnight stays in Spanish tourist apartments fell by 5.2% in June compared to the same month of the previous year. To a greater extent those of residents that fell by 13.9%, while those of non-residents did so by 0.3%.

The average stay in these establishments fell by 2.1%, standing at 4.8 overnight stays per traveler, according to data from the statistical institute.

In June, 35.1% of the beds offered by tourist apartments were occupied, 8.1% less than in the same month of 2022. The degree of occupancy by beds at the weekend stood at 38.6% , with a decrease of 9.9%.

Overnight stays by non-residents represent 67.1% of the total. The United Kingdom is the main source market, with more than 1.6 million overnight stays, the next market being Germany, with 484,338.

The Canary Islands was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 1.7 million overnight stays and a decrease of 0.5% compared to June 2022. For its part, the Balearic Islands registered the highest occupancy, with 78.4% of the offered apartments.

By tourist area, the Costa Blanca was the preferred destination, with 803,204 overnight stays, while the Island of Lanzarote had the highest occupancy rate, with 80.8% of the apartments offered. The tourist spots with the highest number of overnight stays in June were Arona, Tías and San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

40% OF OCCUPIED CAMPING PLOTS.

With regard to campsites, overnight stays registered a decrease of 0.4% in June (-4.1% for residents and -6.4% for non-residents).

During June, 40.6% of the plots offered were occupied, 0.8% less than in the same month of 2022. The degree of occupancy on weekends reached 43.8%, with an annual decrease of 6% .

61.9% of overnight stays in campsites were made by non-resident travelers. The Netherlands was the main issuing market, with 23.1% of the total of those from non-residents, 10.5% more than in June 2022.

Catalonia was the preferred destination for campsites, with more than 2.4 million overnight stays, representing a decrease of 2.3% in the annual rate. La Rioja reached the highest degree of occupancy, with 61.5% of the plots offered.

By tourist area, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with more than 1.1 million overnight stays, while the Costa Blanca (Alicante) had the highest occupancy rate, with 68.1% of the plots offered. The tourist spots with the most overnight stays are Torroella de Montgrí, Mont-Roig del Camp and Benidorm.

RURAL TOURISM IS THE ONLY ONE THAT GROWS SLIGHTLY.

Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation presented an annual increase of 0.9% in June. Those of residents fell by 2.7%, while those of non-residents grew by 8.4%.

In rural tourism accommodation, 19.8% of the beds were occupied, 2.2% less than in June 2022. The degree of occupancy on weekends stood at 34.7%, with an annual decrease of 12.1%.

By communities, the Balearic Islands was the favorite with 200,209 overnight stays, 1.1% less than in June 2022. It also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 62.5% of the places offered.

By tourist area, the Island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 163,308 overnight stays, while the Island of Menorca reached the highest occupancy, with 67.2% of the beds offered, according to statistical data.

Finally, with regard to hostels, in June a total of 832,080 overnight stays were registered in this type of accommodation, which represents an annual decrease of 5.3%. Those of residents decreased by a significant 19%, while those of non-residents increased by 13%.

Galicia was the preferred destination, with a total of 202,526 overnight stays and the Community of Madrid reached the highest occupancy, with 67.5% of the places offered.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics also show prices that rose 9.3% in the case of tourist apartments, 4.9% in campsites and 5.1% in rural tourism accommodation.
