New incident recorded off Yemen coast amid increasing Houthi attacks

MADRID, 16 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organization has reported an incident that took place this Monday off the coast of Yemen, amid the increase in attacks by the Yemeni Houthi rebels against vessels allegedly linked to Israel that transit through the Red Sea.

UKMTO received an alert at around 10:00 p.m. (local time) in which the captain reported that small boats were surrounding the ship, which was approximately 57 nautical miles northwest of the Eritrean town of Asab.

Given this, warning shots were fired, after which the boats dispersed. Both the affected ship and the crew are safe and are heading to a nearby port, according to a statement, in which the UKMTO has asked that they transit with caution and that "any suspicious activity" be reported.

The Iran-backed Houthis, who have controlled Yemen's capital Sanaa and other areas in the country's north and west since 2015, have launched several attacks in the Red Sea since mid-November following the Israeli military offensive against the Gaza Strip. Since then, the United States has created a multinational mission, called 'Guardian of Prosperity', and has carried out bombings - some of them together with the United Kingdom - against Yemeni territory.
