NATO planes intercept several Russian fighters over the Baltic Sea

MADRID, 26 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The German Air Force has reported this Wednesday that several Russian fighters have been intercepted in international airspace over the Baltic Sea in the midst of increasing tension over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Reconnaissance aircraft have been intercepted. German and UK Eurofighter fighters have identified three Russian military aircraft," the German Air Force said in a Twitter message.

Thus, it has specified that it is about two SU-27 fighters and an IL-20, all of them Russian, and has released several images of the aircraft. "These Russian planes have once again flown over the area with no transponder signals," she pointed out.

Countries like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, also members of NATO, do not have their own fighters, so the military alliance has been in charge of guaranteeing the security of airspace in northeast Europe since 2004.

The allies generally deploy fighters and other aircraft over the Baltic, over those states that border Russia, and intercept military and civilian aircraft that do not respect international flight regulations.

At the beginning of April, the German Army left the NATO airspace supervision mission in the hands of the United Kingdom, although it continues to offer support to the British Air Force.
