More than 50 Democratic congressmen ask Biden for Israel to respect International Law

MADRID, 15 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A total of 55 members of the United States House of Representatives have signed a letter addressed to US President Joe Biden, in which they ask him to exert his influence so that Israel respects International Law and respects the civilian population in its offensive. over the Gaza Strip.

The congressmen have expressed their "concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza in Israel's response to the Hamas terrorist attack," they have raised in the letter, led by Pramila Jayapal, Jan Schakowsky, Jim McGovern and Mark Pocan and collected by the Axios portal. .

In particular they refer to the Israeli order to evacuate more than a million Palestinians from the northern Gaza Strip and the "total siege" on the enclave. "We cannot achieve lasting peace or security for Israelis without addressing the humanitarian crises in Gaza and the West Bank," they argued.

That is why they ask that food, water, fuel and humanitarian aid be allowed into the Gaza Strip, as well as a humanitarian corridor for evacuations and the transfer of supplies.

Regarding the US military aid to Israel that Congress is already preparing, the signatories ask that it include a package of humanitarian aid "for both the Palestinians of Gaza and the Israelis."

The letter also warns of possible "hate crimes" against Muslims and Jews in the United States and represents a clear discordant voice with the majority of Congress, which has closed ranks with Israel.

Most of the signatories are considered members of the left wing of the Democratic Party, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Ayanna Pressley, but there are also surprises, such as Dan Kildee, and notable absences, such as Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib or Cori Bush , voices critical of US military aid to Israel.
