Mitsotakis is commissioned to form a government in Greece, but is already demanding new elections

MADRID, 22 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has formally received this Monday the order to form a Government after the legislative elections on Sunday, although he has already done so with a message in favor of calling new elections, "possibly on June 25". .

The Greek president, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, has complied with the constitutional mandate by giving Mitsotakis the power to form a new cabinet, to the extent that her party, New Democracy, was the clear winner of the electoral appointment on Sunday, in which it surpassed 40 percent of the votes.

Mitsotakis has picked up the gauntlet but has made it clear that he will not delay the process and that, having no chance of reaching an absolute majority, he will return the mandate this afternoon. The baton will then go to the second formation with the most votes, Alexis Tsipras's SYRIZA, which had to settle for 20 percent of the vote.

The current prime minister has insisted that Greece needs a strong government, according to the ERT network. He is confident that New Democracy will consolidate its majority if the elections are repeated, since for this second appointment a new system will be applied that recovers the premium for seats for the party with the most votes.

"The best thing for the country is to discuss the real problems," Mitsotakis said this Monday, in a statement in which he considered Sunday's elections a step forward for Greece in terms of "maturity", since for the first time they were able to participate expatriates and the abstention rate was reduced.

The Constitution obliges to call new elections if the three main parties fail to agree on a majority in Parliament. Although early July was initially surveyed as the electoral date, everything indicates that Mitsotakis will try to take advantage of the push of his good results to get the ballot boxes out as soon as possible and reduce the interim time to a minimum.
