Industrial production returns to negative rates after falling by 1.4% in June

The General Industrial Production Index (IPI) fell by 1.4% year-on-year last June, a rate 1.4 points lower than that of May, as reported this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the drop in June, industrial production returned to negative interannual rates after having registered an increase of 0.2% in May.

The production of the energy industry was the one that fell the most in the sixth month of the year, with a year-on-year decrease of 9.5%. They are followed by durable consumer goods (-3.3%) and intermediate goods (-3.1%), while capital goods and non-durable consumer goods increased by 4.6% and 1.7 %, respectively.

Adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, industrial production fell 3% in June compared to the same month of the previous year, a rate 2.4 points lower than that of May.

SIX COMMUNITIES INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF THEIR INDUSTRY

The annual rate of industrial production increased compared to June 2022 in six autonomous communities, while it decreased in the other eleven.

The largest increases were registered in the Canary Islands (8%), Comunidad de Madrid (4.2%) and La Rioja and Cataluña, both with 3.4%. On the other hand, the greatest decreases occurred in Región de Murcia (-13.2%), Principado de Asturias (-9.1%) and Andalucía (-6.3%).

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION FALLS 1% IN THE MONTH

In monthly terms (June over May), industrial production decreased by 1%, a rate 1.5 points lower than that observed in the fifth month of the year.

By branches of activity, all except intermediate goods (0.0%) presented negative monthly rates. The largest monthly decreases in production in the corrected series corresponded to capital goods (-1.2%), non-durable consumer goods (-0.8%) and energy (-0.5%).
