Hungary and Poland temporarily ban the import of agricultural products from Ukraine

The governments of Hungary and Poland have announced on Saturday the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine until June 30.

"The Government undertakes to represent the interests of Hungarian farmers and, like Poland, in the absence of effective measures from the European Union, will introduce a temporary ban on the import of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine and some other agricultural products to Hungary," said Hungarian Agriculture Minister István Nagy.

Nagy has argued that, if current trends continue, the country's farmers would suffer "great damage" because Ukraine uses methods not used in the European Union and that allow huge production at "extremely low" prices, according to Polish station Polskie Radio. .

The Hungarian government plans to adopt other solutions by the end date of the ban.

For his part, the Polish Agriculture Minister, Robert Telus, has announced that the government "is open" to discussing and addressing the issue after Ukraine proposed a meeting to seek solutions.

The list of banned products includes grains, sugar, livestock feed, seeds, hops, flax, hemp, fruits, vegetables, processed fruit and vegetable products, wine, beef, veal, milk and milk products, pork, lamb, eggs, poultry, ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin, products made by bees, live pigs, horses, bovines and slaughtered meat.
