Graffiti vandalism cost Renfe more than 25 million in 2023, close to 70,000 euros per day

MADRID, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Renfe has allocated more than 25 million euros to graffiti vandalism in 2023, close to 70,000 euros per day, both in cleaning work and indirect expenses and investment in personal security and technological systems.

Graffiti vandalism, as Renfe has reported, causes delays, deletions of trains due to lack of visibility or movement in unwanted darkness, direct circumstances that affect the users of its trains.

Specifically, the trains were stopped for 15,000 hours unexpectedly for cleaning graffiti, due to the 3,977 intrusions by graffiti artists reported at Renfe facilities, which represents an average of more than 11 acts of vandalism of this type per day.

In addition, Renfe highlights that when graffiti is carried out on trains, if they are running, they must brake emergency and that the smell of chemicals is "very annoying to travelers."

In 2023, vandalism occurred on 80,000m2 of surface on trains, which involved 15,000 hours of graffiti cleaning work. The presence of Renfe security personnel has tackled 1,194 graffiti incursions last year.

As for the detained people, as a result of the actions and investigations carried out by security personnel and the Security Forces and Bodies, the authors of 124 graffiti were identified and brought to justice.
