Formula 1 confirms six sprint races for next season

MADRID, 7 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Formula 1 has announced this Wednesday that the six sprint races of the 2023 season, twice as many as in 2021 and 2022, will be held at the Grands Prix of Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Qatar, the United States and Brazil, according to a statement.

"Next year, sprint races will take place in Azerbaijan (Baku Street Circuit, April 28-30), Austria (Red Bull Ring, June 30-July 2), Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps, April 28-30), July), Qatar (Losail Circuit, October 6-8), United States (Circuit of the Americas, October 20-22) and Sao Paulo (Interlagos, November 3-5)", reported the competition.

Thus, Interlagos and Red Bull Ring will once again host this type of test that takes place on Saturdays, as in 2021 and 2022. Silverstone, Monza and Imola are the other circuits that have hosted the sprints in the past.

"The selection of circuits for 2023 was produced after research into the layouts most suitable for the format, including overtaking opportunities, close races and high-speed sections, and is designed to ensure competitive action on the track throughout the Grand Prix weekend," he told Formula 1.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed this increase from three to six events for next year. "We've seen a hugely positive reaction to sprint racing in the first two years of its operation, and we're looking forward to bringing even more action to fans with six events next year," he noted.

"This format promises three days of competitive racing action and provides more entertainment for Formula 1 fans, as well as added value for stakeholders including teams, media, partners and host venues," he added.

Finally, the president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, confessed that he is looking forward to these sprint races. "Following the strong collaboration between the FIA and the FOM, and the approval of the World Motor Sport Council, we are pleased to reveal the six sprint races for the 2023 season," he concluded.
