FIFA agrees to Qatar's demand and prohibits the sale of beer in the vicinity of the stadiums

The sale of beer in the vicinity of the stadiums will be prohibited during the World Cup in Qatar, after FIFA agreed to the host country's demand.

"Following discussions between the authorities of the host country and FIFA, the decision was made to concentrate the sale of alcoholic beverages at the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan meeting points and licensed venues, removing beer outlets from the perimeters of the stadiums", FIFA confirmed this Friday.

This same Friday, the British newspaper The Times reported that the Qatari authorities were pressuring the world soccer governing body to completely ban the sale of beer in the eight stadiums where the tournament is held.

"The authorities of the host country and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide a pleasant, respectful and enjoyable experience for all fans," FIFA added, confirming that the sale of non-alcoholic beer "will remain available in all the stadiums.

Budweiser, owned by Belgian multinational AB InBev, is one of FIFA's biggest sponsors, but was asked on Saturday to move its stadium stands to less visible locations. The Times reported that Qatar wanted to completely ban the sale of beer, something that has finally been limited.

"The tournament organizers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continued support of our joint commitment to serve everyone during the World Cup," concluded the statement issued by the body chaired by Gianni Infantino.
