Endesa creates "natural reserves" at its renewable facilities to recover biodiversity

Endesa, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power Spain, has set up "nature reserves" in the surroundings of its solar panels that had seen their biodiversity diminished, due to their previous agro-industrial use, as the company stressed this Saturday.

Some of these "oasis", which combine natural life with the production of clean energy from the sun, are located in the solar plants of Totana (Murcia), in the Extremaduran territories of Valdecaballeros or Veracruz and in Carmona (Seville).

Specifically, the Totana solar plant, which started up in 2021, dedicates eight hectares of land to recover and return to its natural habitat "which until then had been dedicated to intensive cultivation and was significantly degraded by the use of phytosanitary products or plastics for this purpose", stressed Endesa.

The result, two years later, has been the creation of a reserve in its ecological corridor, in which flora and fauna have proliferated naturally thanks to the restoration of the habitat and the provision of a space dedicated to the organic cultivation of legumes and cereals. without use, which ensures food and nesting habitat for these birds.

For the person in charge of the Environment of the Endesa solar plants, Juan Abad, "this grain of sand" has been developed hand in hand with experts and competent authorities, since in his opinion, they all play a "crucial role" in conservation enviroment.

Likewise, one of the latest facilities in which Endesa, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Spain, is developing a new "ecological island" is the Veracruz solar plant, located between Mérida and Almendralejo, which has been in operation since December of 2021.

For their part, Endesa and EGPE are developing environmental improvement projects at the company's plants in the Balearic Islands, specifically, in Sa Caseta and Biniatria (Mallorca), where they are improving and installing new landscape integration measures with plant barriers, planning new initiatives to install nests, birdbaths and collaborating in various bird conservation projects through local NGOs.
