Chinese police place Hui Ka Yan, president of Chinese real estate company Evergrande, under house arrest

MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Chinese authorities have placed the president of the real estate developer Evergrande, Hui Ka Yan, under house arrest, as reported this Wednesday by sources with knowledge of the matter consulted by 'Bloomberg'.

Thus, the manager is being monitored after having already been requested by the police earlier this month. In this sense, the legislation of the Asian 'giant' provides that the incommunicado regime and the delivery to the authorities of the passport and DNI do not exceed a period of six months.

However, the reasons for such measures have not been revealed, since he has not been formally detained nor have charges been brought against him.

These measures follow the announcement just a few days ago that Evergrande "could not meet the requirements" for the issuance of new notes because one of its main subsidiaries, Hengda Real Estate, was under investigation.

The news shook the promoter's shares on the stock market, which fell 20% of the price at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, down to 0.44 Hong Kong dollars (0.052 euros). The shares of the Asian company fell by 24% in the session, dragging down other real estate companies, such as Country Garden (-8.6%) and Hang Seng itself, the main indicator of Hong Kong, which lost 1.6 %.

Likewise, last week several Evergrande Wealth employees were arrested just a month after declaring bankruptcy in the United States. The company then assured that the arrests "would not affect its operations."

According to the police in Shenzhen, in the southern province of Guangdong and where the real estate group is based, among those detained was a person surnamed Du, which could refer to Du Liang, CEO of Evergrande Wealth.

The arrest of the Evergrande Wealth workers came two weeks after the group again defaulted on payments on its investment products. However, the police asked the population to report suspicions of fraud through the internet, telephone, messages or email.
