Brussels avoids condemning the Israeli offensive in Gaza and says it "cannot judge" its actions against Hamas

BRUSELAS, 12 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

This Thursday, the European Commission avoided condemning Israel's offensive against the Gaza Strip, ensuring that it has the right to exercise its defense following international law, and insisting that it "cannot judge" the actions that the Jewish State must take to combat Hamas terrorism.

At a press conference from the community capital, the main spokesman for the European Executive, Eric Mamer, assured that Israel has to respect international law in its reaction to Hamas terrorism, which left at least 1,200 dead in its incursion last Saturday. and that every effort must be made to "ensure the safety of civilians."

However, when asked by journalists he has avoided condemning the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, which is deprived of water, electricity and food, and drawing parallels with Russian actions in Ukraine.

"Israel is in a situation where it is defending itself in an extremely complex theater of operations. Here we cannot judge the actions that must be taken by Israel to fight the terrorism of Hamas, which attacked its territory," he indicated.

Regarding the position of President Ursula Von der Leyen, who has avoided setting limits on Israel's response, her spokesperson has stressed that respect for international law is part of European values and therefore is "a constant" and is "implied " in the statements. The German conservative did not refer to international law when referring to the actions against the Gaza Strip, something that both the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, have insisted on. .

For his part, the EU Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, has also avoided describing the Israeli siege in the Strip as war crimes and has indicated that the situation is "a direct consequence of the indiscriminate terrorist attack by Hamas."

Regarding the images that come from the coastal enclave, heavily bombed by the Israeli Army, Stano has avoided commenting on the destruction caused by Israel and has chosen instead to point out that the images and information that comes from the terrorist attacks by Hamas militiamen "are worse." " than the Islamic State attacks.

"Some actions remind us of what the Islamic State did or even worse," he reiterated, recalling that the terrorists "massacred" about 300 people who were at a music festival.

In recent hours, Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have shared images on social media of the massacres carried out by Palestinian terrorists, accompanying them with the message 'Hamas is worse than the Islamic State.'

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has also compared the attack on the music festival to the Islamic State attacks against the Bataclán venue in Paris or the Arianna Grande concert in the United Kingdom, in an attempt to draw unanimous condemnation from the international community.
