Amazon generates an investment of 670 million in Spain with its renewable energy projects

Exceeds 2.3 GW of renewable capacity in Spain with 24 new projects

The solar and wind installations promoted by Amazon in Spain have generated an estimated investment of 670 million euros in the country, and have contributed more than 243 million euros to the local Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a new economic model developed by the e-commerce giant, which has announced 24 new projects.

The firm has highlighted that these projects have also contributed to the creation of more than 1,800 full-time equivalent jobs in Spain.

Along these lines, the company has detailed that this model applies both to large-scale renewable energy projects that began to be built or came into operation between 2014 and 2022, and to those that are expected to come into operation this year, as a result of Amazon's investments in power purchase agreements (PPAs).

In Europe, renewable energy projects promoted by the e-commerce giant have helped generate, between 2014 and 2022, an estimated investment of 2.4 billion euros, and have contributed more than 723 million euros to European GDP.

For its part, Amazon announced this Monday 24 new renewable energy projects in Spain, consisting of 19 'off-site' installations and five solar roofs on its buildings, with a combined renewable capacity of 794 megawatts (MW).

Specifically, these investments raise the firm's renewable capacity in Spain to more than 2.3 gigawatts (GW), with a total of 67 wind and solar projects in the country - 37 large-scale 'off-site' installations and 30 solar roofs on their buildings--.

The company has stressed that when all these projects are operational, they will add a total renewable energy production capacity equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 1.3 million Spanish homes.

The new off-site projects in Spain will consist of two wind farms, located in Castilla y León, and 17 solar plants, of which six will be located in Castilla-La Mancha, four in Castilla y León, another four in Valencia and the three remaining in Andalusia, Aragon and Extremadura, respectively.

"With more than 160 wind and solar projects in Europe, at Amazon we are helping to provide new sources of clean energy to local grids, creating jobs and supporting Spanish companies as we move to have our operations powered by energy 100% renewable by 2025", highlighted Lindsay McQuade, the director of Energy in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region of Amazon.
