Underground storage reaches a filling level of 99%

Algeria consolidates as the main supplier of natural gas to Spain so far in 2023, after once again being the first supplier last July, with a total of 9,106 gigawatt hours (GWh), to cover 28.7% of monthly demand, according to data from the latest Enagás bulletin.

Thus, in the first seven months of the year, the African country, historically the main Spanish supplier of natural gas although last year suffered a 'sorpasso' by the United States, has supplied more than 59,100 GWh to the country, to cover the 25% of the total demand until July.

Algeria is thus ahead of Russia, which with 49,909 GWh has supplied 21.1% of Spain's demand for natural gas in 2023, having also been the second main source of gas arriving in the country in July, with 8,764 GWh , 27.6% of the total.

In third place, in the month of July and in the first seven months of 2023, is the United States, with 19.1% of the total demand this year, ahead of Nigeria, with 13.9%.

Regarding underground storage, they are practically at their maximum fill level, reaching 99% at the end of July. In the same month last year they were at 78%.

For its part, the national demand for natural gas in the month of July registered a decrease of 15.9% compared to the same period last year, with 26,199 GWh. On the contrary, conventional demand grew by 13%, while that of the electricity sector fell by 39.4%.

In the first seven months of the year, natural gas consumption accumulates a decline of 14% compared to the same period in 2022, with 192,517 GWh.
