The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, held a conversation with the Prime Minister of the deposed government of Niger, Ouhmoudou Mahamadou, and offered him the support of Spain and the European Union against the coup of State in the African country.
"I have spoken with the Prime Minister of Niger. We have analyzed the situation in the country and the decisions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in this regard. I have offered him our support, also as the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU ", the minister pointed out in a message on Twitter, picked up by Europa Press.
Albares also conveyed on Monday Spain's support for the sanctions that ECOWAS has imposed against individuals and organizations linked to the Niger coup junta.
In statements to the media when collecting his minutes in Congress, the minister once again called for the release of the democratically elected Nigerien president, Mohamed Bazoum, and his family and the restoration of constitutional channels in the African country. In addition, he stressed that Spain will not resume bilateral cooperation with Niger until the above is fulfilled.
