Abbas calls on the UN to intervene "immediately" to stop "Israel's aggression" against the Palestinians

MADRID, 10 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, asked this Monday the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to intervene "immediately" to stop "Israel's aggression" against the Palestinians, in particular, against the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

Abbas, during a phone call, highlighted the importance of delivering aid to civilians, so the United Nations intervention would have the objective of "avoiding a humanitarian disaster" in Gaza, since Israel has cut off electricity to residents in this enclave, violating International Law.

Thus, he has urged the UN to fulfill its duties recognized by international legitimacy and provide international protection to the Palestinian people, as reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The president has reiterated that the only solution to the conflict in the region is a political solution that ends the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, announced this Monday the "complete siege" of Gaza, in such a way that the territory will not receive electricity, fuel, or food. "We are fighting with human animals and we will act in the same way," he said.

The Israeli authorities have already maintained a tight blockade on the Strip since 2007, the year in which Hamas took control of the Strip after an internal struggle with Al Fatah, the Palestinian faction that governs the West Bank.
