A second Spaniard, a UN worker, manages to leave Gaza through the Rafá crossing

MADRID, 2 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spaniard Jesús Sánchez, a worker at the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), managed to leave Gaza this Thursday through the Rafá crossing, which connects the Palestinian enclave with Egypt, according to diplomatic sources have confirmed to Europa Press.

This is the second compatriot who manages to leave the Gaza Strip in recent days after yesterday a worker from the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was able to leave when the passage was opened to allow the evacuation of foreign citizens and those injured by the Israeli bombings.

The opening of the Rafah crossing on Wednesday was the first opportunity for the foreign population to leave the Palestinian enclave since the outbreak of war following the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel's subsequent response. .

To date, the pass had only been open on several specific occasions to allow the entry of convoys with humanitarian aid. The current agreement was brokered by Qatar, in coordination with the United States, for a pact between Egypt, Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

Precisely, the acting Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, informed the media this Thursday that it is expected that between 140 and 170 Spaniards will be able to leave the Gaza Strip through the Rafá crossing and has specified that the Israeli authorities and Egyptians are already coordinating these departures with the countries. On her side, the Government already has "everything prepared" in Cairo to go look for the Spaniards who manage to leave "today or tomorrow."

Likewise, the acting Defense Minister has not ruled out the Government organizing an air evacuation if necessary. "The Armed Forces are prepared," she assured, without giving further details.
