The man was taken to the hospital after trying to commit suicide in a case that is being investigated as sexist violence

A man has allegedly killed his 25-year-old ex-partner with a knife in Palmeira, in the A Coruña municipality of Ribeira, and then tried to commit suicide, according to sources familiar with the case inform Europa Press. It is being investigated as a sexist crime.

As reported by 112 to Europa Press, around 5:30 p.m. this Tuesday, an individual called to report an altercation in a home on Doctor Torres Street, in Palmeira, municipality of Ribeira. Thus, the National Police, Local Police, Ribeira firefighters and 061 were notified.

When emergency services entered the home, they found a deceased woman inside. For his part, the man is in critical condition after attempting suicide and has been taken to the hospital. 061 sent a doctor from the Ribeira PAC and a medical ambulance.

The couple has a small son who was not at home and is safe in the care of relatives.

According to the sources consulted by Europa Press, there was no evidence that the woman was in the comprehensive monitoring system in cases of gender violence (VioGén) of the Ministry of the Interior.

If confirmed, she would be the first woman killed by sexist violence in the Galician community so far in 2024. Through social networks, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence has reported that it is "collecting data on the alleged "murder due to gender violence of a 25-year-old woman in the province of A Coruña".

At 9:15 p.m. this Tuesday, the victim's body was removed from the house located in Palmeira. Several Scientific Police agents have traveled to the scene to collect evidence.

For his part, the mayor of Ribeira (A Coruña), Luís Pérez, has expressed his rejection of "such a serious tragedy." He advances that he will call an extraordinary plenary session this Wednesday (at 1:45 p.m.) to declare days of mourning.

"We have to reject all types of sexist violence," he stated in statements to Europa Press. Thus, he calls for "eradicating" this scourge.

Likewise, the Municipal Corporation calls on citizens to rally against this sexist crime. It will be from 8:00 p.m. on the Malecón (next to the Maritime Captaincy).
