- Report reveals that Huawei DigiTruck training helps increase income, employment and entrepreneurship

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 29, 2024/PRNewswire/ -- The Government of Kenya and Huawei Kenya today launched an independent evaluation report on digital skills training delivered by the DigiTruck programme.

Launched in 2019 in Kenya under Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative, the DigiTruck is a solar-powered mobile classroom equipped with internet connectivity, laptops and smartphones. Converted from a used shipping container mounted on the back of a truck, the DigiTruck travels to remote communities in Kenya, providing free digital skills training to young people, enabling them to participate more fully in the digital economy.

The report was launched at the Connected Africa Summit by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and Digital Economy Eliud Owalo and Huawei Kenya CEO Steven Zhang.

Inaugurating the Summit, H.E. President Ruto highlighted the findings of the report and praised the programme.

“This is the impact of a simple intervention in terms of youth empowerment, and affirms the promise of our collaborative approach and the power of partnerships to achieve ambitious goals,” explained H.E. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya.

One of the main advantages of the DigiTruck program is its mobility, which allows training to be provided in communities that are difficult to access.

"To facilitate optimal adoption of digital infrastructure, it is imperative that we have a proportionate level of digital training; that is why this DigiTruck program is so useful, because through this program we can reach very remote areas that we would not normally be able to access for digital training purposes," explained Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy. "We want to thank Huawei for this innovative digital training program and want to assure you that we will continue to work with you on the digital training program as we roll out our digital transformation agenda."

Each course lasts 40 hours and offers training in digital and soft skills, such as starting an online business, writing resumes and applying for jobs online. A survey of 800 of the more than 4,000 young people trained over four years revealed important positive tangible results for the beneficiaries. Some of the main conclusions are:

"From the beginning, the goal of the DigiTruck was to reach remote areas; reach young people who normally don't have many opportunities; and reach the entire country," said Steven Zhang, deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya. "The goal of this DigiTruck is not only to provide digital skills, but also to spread the message about the importance of digital skills and rally others to our cause."

As Kenya moves into the digital age, the need for digital skills has gone from a luxury to a necessity.

The DigiTruck initiative, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy, Huawei and other partners, has been at the forefront of training young Kenyans with these essential skills.
