Casar de Cáceres, May 6, 2024. – The province of Cáceres constitutes an ideal place of natural, gastronomic and cultural resources that often goes unnoticed by many travelers. Extremadura's monumental past, its parks and natural reserves make this area a national jewel to discover. For this reason, the Regulatory Council of the Torta del Casar Protected Designation of Origin has proposed to publicize the richness of this place through a new tourist project that has cheese protected at the center: the Gastronomic Route 'El Sabor de Un Territory'.

The initiative, which coincides with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin, seeks to promote tourism, a key sector for economic development, offering travelers experiences that value the historical and landscape heritage of Cáceres through one of its hallmarks: gastronomy.

“Travelers who come to our territory do so to enjoy experiences and visit our monuments, but also to learn about our cuisine. That is why we wanted to create the Gastronomic Route, a tool so that visitors can design their stay in Cáceres and get to know Torta del Casar,” explained the director of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin (D.O.P.) Torta del Casar, Javier Muñoz.

The route includes five routes that run through different areas of the province. Each of them describes a complete tourist itinerary, a short and accessible getaway that starts and returns to Casar de Cáceres, birthplace of Torta del Casar. The stops on each route include museum and interpretive spaces related to pastoral and nomadic culture, more than fifteen charming hotels and restaurants to delight in authentic Extremaduran cuisine, in which Torta del Casar acts as host.

Cáceres: a tourist gem to discover

The culture and nature of the province well deserve their place in the great tourist guides of the world. Its territory has a notable monumental heritage and a privileged landscape, which allows you to enjoy nature in its purest form. As a consequence of this natural wealth, Cáceres has developed an excellent gastronomic offer as a result of the great role that agriculture and livestock have had over the centuries.

So much so, that its towns and cities host a wide variety of events linked to local products, such as the Torta del Casar Week or the Trujillo National Cheese Fair. And in an area where food is celebrated as a cultural asset, gastronomic tourism stands as one of the best ways to learn about its identity.

Each region, throughout history, has been linked to a series of products that are the result of the natural and human factors that make it up. Foods are closely linked to the territory, especially those with Designation of Origin,” Muñoz points out.

Five tours to get to know and taste Cáceres

The five routes of the Gastronomic Route invite you to discover the province with free experiences that users can book directly through the website. The first covers the southwest area, and promises to take travelers into Extremadura's monumental past, starting with the city of Cáceres, and then moving towards Casar de Cáceres, birthplace of the Torta del Casar, where visitors will be able to learn more about this product during your visit to the Cheese Museum.

Next, the path covers the Tajo Salor Almonte area, a region that preserves great vestiges of Extremaduran history, such as the Roman bridge of Alcántara or the historical complex of Brozas and Garrovillas de Alconétar. Likewise, they will visit landscapes such as the natural monument of Los Barruecos, the setting for series such as 'Game of Thrones'.

The second route invites you to discover the northwest of the province, passing through the areas of Valle del Alagón, Sierra de Gata, and Las Hurdes, where the simplicity of Romanesque architecture contrasts with the monumental forms of nature. The historical complexes of Coria, Galisteo and San Martín de Trevejo are some of its cultural landmarks.

Within the natural resources, this tour invites hiking lovers to visit enclaves such as the Meandro del Melero or the Chorro de la Meancera, and, when night falls, enjoy the Extremaduran skies with astronomical observations, accompanied by cake tastings. del Casar paired with organic fruits and wines from the region.
