Borrell points out that several EU countries may recognize the State of Palestine in May

BRUSSELS, April 29 (EUROPA PRESS) -

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, pointed out this Monday that several member states of the bloc can recognize the Palestinian State as early as the month of May, following the vote of the United Nations General Assembly.

In an interview with several media outlets in Saudi Arabia, where he is participating in the World Economic Forum, the head of diplomacy expressed his expectation that some EU member states will announce their decision to recognize Palestine in the course of of the month of May, community sources have explained to Europa Press.

In this sense, the High Representative has insisted that the two-state solution is only possible if Palestine is recognized, the same sources indicate.

Despite not going into details about which countries will take the step, on the table is the initiative of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta to recognize Palestine to give a boost to the two-state solution, a formula shared by the entire international community. including the United States.

Precisely, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, began a tour that took him to Norway, Ireland and Slovenia with the aim of achieving European convergence to take the step together. He also met with the new Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, and in the framework of the European Council he met with the leaders of Belgium, Malta and Luxembourg.

Sánchez set a deadline to proceed with the recognition of the Palestinian State in the first half of this year and government sources reiterated days ago that Spain could take the step alone before the summer. "Spain's political decision has been made and does not depend on other countries," the sources stressed.

In this context, the decision may be linked to the vote in the United Nations General Assembly in the coming weeks on the entry of Palestine as a full member of the international organization, a vote that will however be symbolic and non-binding after the rejection of the Security Council after the United States veto.
