Almeida points to the death of two workers after being trapped under an 8-ton slab in Madrid

MADRID, 7 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, pointed out this Tuesday that the two workers trapped in the building under construction whose floor has collapsed "it is very difficult" for them to be alive since an eight-eight slab has fallen on them. tons of weight.

The events occurred around 11:15 a.m. in an office building under construction located on Lezama Street and Llodio Street, near Cardenal Herrera Oria Avenue, in the Fuencarral-El Pardo district, according to what Emergency sources have informed Europa Press. Madrid.

As the mayor explained from the scene, "unfortunately everything indicates that two people have died as a result of the collapse of this forging." Members of the Madrid City Council Firefighters are working at the scene since the building is unstable and there is a danger of collapse.

A third worker has been rescued and taken to the La Paz hospital with advance notice after suffering a broken leg and multiple bruises. His condition is serious but in principle there is no life-threatening risk, health sources have indicated.

According to the construction manager, after having made a count of the personnel working on the rehabilitation of the property, the building is empty and only these two construction workers would be trapped.

As for the building, according to Almeida, due to its instability it is "very difficult" for firefighters to access its interior. "The consolidation work in your case is going to take a long time. We have to be calm because at the moment there are some slabs and several beams that also threaten to collapse," he indicated.

It is an old building that was being renovated. It had a tertiary use, which has been changed to residential use, and 140 homes were going to be built. The City Council is investigating the licenses to check that everything is in order.

"There is certainly no conclusion to be drawn for now in this regard. We are already checking, from an urban planning point of view, the licenses and the administrative procedure followed to be able to begin the execution of these works," indicated the mayor of the capital.

Along the same lines, the mayor has declined to venture any hypothesis about the causes of the collapse of the slab. "We must let the firefighters work calmly to be able to shore up and consolidate the building in the first place and prevent more collapses from occurring," he indicated.

In the work of consolidating the property, as Almeida explained, they have been helped by a crane located in the nearby building "to be able to see the building from above and to be able to start moving certain material that is inside the building.

There are about 40 members of the City Council Firefighters at the scene while a Samur-Civil Protection health emergency device has been deployed.
