Xi conveys to former President Medvedev China's interest in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

MADRID, 21 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of China, Xi Jinping, has transferred to the former Russian president and current vice president of the Security Council, Dimitri Medvedev, that from Beijing they are interested in the progress of peace negotiations between kyiv and Moscow.

"China expects the parties involved to behave rationally, be moderate, hold comprehensive talks and resolve their mutual security concerns through political methods," Xi stressed in statements to Chinese state media.

In this sense, the Chinese president pointed out to Medvedev that although China continues to consider Russia an important partner, they are also interested in promoting peace talks, according to the Bloomberg agency.

The Chinese president's statements could mean a paradigm shift in Beijing's policy, which until now had been ambiguous when it came to condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine ten months ago.

However, on the occasion of the recent G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, China already signed a joint declaration in which the majority of the participants in that meeting expressed a firm condemnation of the war in Ukraine.

Throughout the last year, China has preferred to avoid unnecessary tensions with the European Union, which already last year paralyzed an investment agreement between accusations and sanctions -promoted by Washington- for the Human Rights violations that are being committed in the Xinjiang region.

In November, President Xi called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Council President Charles Michel to intensify efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, while conveying Beijing's opposition to any escalation of arms and nuclear forces in Europe.
