Washington investigates the presence of US technology in Iranian drones used in Ukraine

MADRID, 21 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Government has created a group to investigate how components manufactured in the North American country ended up in the Iranian drones that Russia would be using in the framework of its military offensive on Ukraine, to determine possible loopholes or breaches in the sanctions against Iran.

The United States restricts exports that may favor Iran, but research published in November by Conflict Armament Research found that more than 82 percent of drone components came from American companies.

Officials from the State, Defense, Commerce, Justice and Treasury departments participate in the investigation opened in Washington, revealed by CNN, with the White House National Security Council as supervisor. The Joe Biden Administration will also request information from other international allies.

There is no evidence that any of the companies involved were aware of the final use of their technology, so the US authorities trust that the companies will improve supervision of the entire supply chain, since theoretically civilian teams, regardless of the sanctions, they may end up being used for military purposes.

One of the first tasks of the commission is to alert the companies whose components are included in the drones, such as Texas Instruments, which in a statement has already stated that it "does not sell any product to Russia, Belarus or Iran" and that it "complies with all laws and regulations in force in the countries where it operates".

The Russian Armed Forces have already launched hundreds of drones to attack strategic objectives in Ukraine, mainly of an energy nature. Despite the evidence collected on the ground, Iran has never confirmed this collaboration and denies any involvement in the war that began in February on Ukrainian territory.
