US confirms shipment of Patriot systems to Ukraine

MADRID, 21 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of the United States has announced this Wednesday a new package of military aid to Ukraine valued at 1,850 million dollars, which includes the first shipment of Patriot anti-aircraft defense systems, coinciding with the first trip abroad of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stressed that this technology is "capable of shooting down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher altitude than previous defense systems provided."

"We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes, so that kyiv can continue to defend itself and arrive at the negotiating table in the best possible position when the time comes," stressed the head of US diplomacy, who praised the "extraordinary bravery" of the Ukrainian people in the face of "brutal attacks" by Russia.

In this sense, he has accused the Russian forces of trying to "freeze and starve" Ukrainian citizens now that winter is coming, after more than 300 days in which "it has failed" in its attempt to "erase Ukraine on the map.

With the aid known this Wednesday --the twenty-eighth package since August 2021--, there are already 21.9 billion dollars destined for Ukraine by the Administration of President Joe Biden, who will receive his Ukrainian counterpart at the White House this Wednesday.
