Truss's departure opens the door to former candidates and even to the remote return of Johnson

Six weeks after she assured the British that she was capable of "weathering the storm" that Boris Johnson left behind, Liz Truss presented her resignation as Prime Minister on Thursday, once she was unable to resist external pressure, but especially the ones that came from his party.

Now the door is open to several possibilities, among them that of the former Minister of Finance Rishi Sunak; that of Defense Minister Ben Wallace; that of the 'tory' leader in the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt; that of the ephemeral former Minister of the Interior, Suella Braverman, or the most surprising, that of Johnson himself, a favorite among the militancy, according to a latest survey.

The one who is already ruled out is the Minister of the Treasury, Jeremy Hunt, the one chosen by Truss to reverse his own economic plans and end practically all the tax cuts established in the disdained 'mini budget', after he himself has been in charge of announce it shortly after it became known that there will soon be a new tenant at 10 Downing Street.

The former finance minister, who fell behind Truss in the previous race to replace Johnson, is now the favourite, according to British bookmakers. Sunak was one of those who criticized the "fairy tale" economic plan that the prime minister intended to implement.

Although he won in all rounds of voting among MPs to occupy the leadership of the Conservatives, it remains to be seen whether the key role he played in Johnson's departure could take its toll on him.

Next on the list is the Conservative leader in the House of Commons, third in that vote to replace Johnson. Former defense minister, Mordaunt is one of the party figures who have been asked to step forward to reverse the 'Tories' tailspin.

For his part, it remains to be seen whether Wallace, one of the party's most respected figures, would be willing to take the lead after months of ruling out such a possibility. "I want to be defense minister until I'm done. I love my job and we have more to do," he said at the time.

As for Braverman, she was the first to declare that she was standing to lead the Conservative Party even before Johnson resigned cornered by various scandals.

Recognized by the toughest sectors of the party for her staunch defense of Brexit and the most restrictive immigration policies, this Wednesday she resigned after skipping the security protocols by sending an email "part of a political commitment" on migration to another parliamentary.
