Torrential rains leave at least two dead in Brazil and force the closure of roads

MADRID, 20 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The torrential rains that hit the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil on Tuesday have left at least two people dead and forced the closure of federal and state highways due to unstable terrain.

Two women, aged 17 and 18, have died after being buried in the town of Camboriú, as detailed by the municipal authorities, who have pointed out that both victims were sisters. A third person, a child under the age of nine, has been injured.

The Camboriú City Council has declared a state of emergency, while health services and educational centers have suspended their activity, according to the Brazilian news portal Universo Online.

The inclement weather has also caused flooding that has flooded homes and submerged vehicles, as detailed by the Brazilian authorities, according to the local newspaper 'O Globo'.

The authorities have installed shelters in the cities of Penha, Balneário Camboriú and Palhoça so that people displaced by the storms can stay. The Government of Santa Catarina has called to avoid unnecessary displacement.
