Three people convicted of rape executed in Iran

The Iranian authorities have executed this Thursday three people convicted of rape and robbery in a prison in the city of Shiraz, located in the south of the country, amid the rebound in the application of capital punishment in the Central Asian country.

The head of the judicial apparatus of the province of Fars, Kazem Mousavi, has detailed that the three executed had been sentenced in July and has added that the sentences were later ratified, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Thus, it has indicated that all of them were found guilty of armed robbery and raping several women in Shiraz and added that the victims of these "violent and inhumane acts" suffered "serious mental and emotional damage" as a result of the attack.

Mousavi has indicated that the sentencing and execution of these people is in line with the defense of the rights of the population, "especially women", and has emphasized that the judicial apparatus will act "decisively" against the "criminals". .

Various NGOs have denounced that the number of executions in Iran has increased since the arrival of Ebrahim Raisi to the Iranian Presidency in 2021. Amnesty International has indicated that 250 people were executed during the first half of 2022, mainly for drug-related charges.

In addition, the Iranian authorities have executed two people, including one in public, for their role in protests sparked in September over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman detained in the capital, Tehran, for allegedly misplaced the veil.
