The US monitors a possible Russian spy ship in international waters off the coast of Hawaii

MADRID, 19 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Coast Guard has reported on Thursday the tracking of a Russian vessel for alleged espionage activities in international waters off the Hawaiian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.

Although the US Coast Guard has acknowledged that the situation is not abnormal, they are closely monitoring the activities of this vessel in light of possible violations of the treaties on the country's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Hawaiian archipelago, in the Central Pacific, is home to several bases of both the United States Air Force and Navy.

According to CNN, this is not the first time that the United States has warned of the presence of a Russian spy ship, since in 2019 it observed a vessel of such characteristics off the southeast coast of the country.

At that time, the US authorities determined that the activities of the 'Viktor Leonov' off South Carolina and Florida were not safe, since it did not apply the established maritime security protocols.

Thursday's warnings from the Coast Guard come at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow are at their lowest point in years due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in late February last year.
