The legal siege on Trump tightens as the investigations advance

MADRID, 4 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Department of Justice is studying the possibility of appointing a special prosecutor to supervise the open investigations against former President Donald Trump in view of the possibility that he may again stand as a candidate for the presidential elections scheduled for November 2024.

As this possibility seems to materialize with an eye on next week's 'midterm', the mid-term elections that serve as a form of consultation on the approval of the current Administration, high officials of the Department of Justice have put on the table the possibility of appointing a special prosecutor for the future, especially in relation to two of the federal investigations that the New York tycoon has open against him.

Said prosecutor will have to address, especially, if there is the possibility that the former president will finally be charged for any of the causes that remain open, according to information from the CNN television network.

As the election draws nearer, Justice Department officials have kept a low profile behind closed doors, though investigators have been issuing subpoenas in an attempt to gather testimony related to the probe into Trump's efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential elections and the management of secret information and documents by the former White House tenant once he left office.

The investigators plan to increase their activities once the midterms are over, which could lead to the indictment of partners and former advisers to the former US president, an issue that could become more complicated if Trump finally confirms that he will run again as a candidate for the presidential elections.

Legal pressure on Trump has increased recently, especially following a search carried out by the Federal Police (FBI) against his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, for the alleged extraction of classified documents from the White House once the magnate left the presidency.

The mere fact that the federal authorities decided to carry out such actions in his residence reveals the extent to which Trump is now under the spotlight of Justice as he studies running for election again. Both he and his family insist that these investigations are nothing more than one more example of a partial and vindictive vision that seeks to leave him out of the electoral race.

Several investigations weigh on Trump in relation to the results of the last presidential elections: the Department of Justice investigates his attempts to reverse the ratification of the votes that gave victory to Joe Biden, while the House of Representatives continues to try to discern its responsibility in storming the Capitol in an attempt to stay in power.

In addition, Trump and his partners face legal issues in the state of Georgia, where the Prosecutor's Office is studying the pressure exerted to facilitate the certification of results in favor of the Republican candidate when in reality Biden had won.

Trump could thus become the first former president in the history of the United States to be impeached, and the authorities foresee a political storm if charges are brought against him while he is an active candidate for the Presidency.

The former president also has an open process in the state of New York, precisely because of his business practices and his refusal to file his tax returns to date. These investigations focus on the idea that Trump could have valued his properties following a pattern of fraud, inflating his value to receive loans or falsifying information to obtain tax benefits.
