The US Department of Justice asks to declare Trump in contempt for the case of classified documents

MADRID, 9 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Department of Justice has asked a federal judge to hold former President Donald Trump in contempt for failing to comply with the order to turn over classified documents he had in his possession, reports CNN.

According to the sources of the newspaper 'The Washington Post', the Department of Justice would have asked that it was the legal team of Trump who was declared in contempt.

The move comes after a team hired by the former president's lawyers reported Wednesday that they had found two new documents in a storage unit in West Palm Beach, Florida, after conducting searches in four locations.

Trump's team handed over those two documents to the FBI and announced to the magistrate in charge of the chaos in Washington DC that they believed the former president was complying with the request to hand over all the files.

The main stumbling block in relations between the Justice Department and Trump's legal team has been the latter's repeated refusal to confirm that all classified records had been returned to the government.

Since the beginning of this year, the former president's team has delivered boxes and envelopes with federal records. In the summer, investigators broke into his Mar-a-Lago mansion, where they seized several dozen more boxes, containing more than 100 documents marked as classified.
