The US agrees to a new prisoner exchange with Russia to obtain the release of ex-marine Paul Whelan

MADRID, 28 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The authorities of the United States and Russia have reached an agreement to carry out a new exchange of prisoners throughout 2023, which would finally mean the release of ex-marine Paul Whelan, imprisoned in the country for almost five years.

Thus, former Secretary of Energy and US diplomat Bill Richardson has confirmed that Whelan's release and deportation will take place throughout this year. Richardson is deep in prisoner swap talks between Moscow and Washington, a matter that has been hampered as Russia's invasion of Ukraine progresses.

"I am an optimist by nature. And they laughed at me last year when I said that American citizens Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner would be released before the end of the year, and they did," he stressed in an interview with the Russian news agency. TASS.

In this sense, he has pointed out that "he was right", although this does not mean that "these exchanges took place thanks to me". "I am now hopeful that Paul Whelan will also be released," she has asserted.

"We are also working on other cases and, fortunately, those exchanges will also take place," he said in response to a question about the possibilities of more exchanges of this type in the future.

However, Richardson has questioned the possibility that these negotiations include exchanges with prisoners who are in Germany and have previously been sentenced to life in prison, especially in the case related to the 2019 murder in Berlin of a Georgian citizen. and a former Chechen militiaman, Zelimjan Jangoshvili.

In addition, he has emphasized that the main priority of the United States Government is "to achieve the release of Whelan", although he has stressed that the case is somewhat "frozen" despite the fact that there will be progress in this regard.

"The good news is that despite the bad relations with Russia, prisoner exchanges continue to take place. Negotiations continue on both the US and Russian sides despite the dire geopolitical situation," he concluded.
