The United States "expects to work closely" with the "unity government" of the president of Peru Dina Boluarte

MADRID, 9 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States has indicated that it "expects to work closely" with the "unity government" led by the recent president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, after Pedro Castillo was dismissed by the Peruvian Congress on Wednesday shortly after announcing the closure of the Parliament and declared a government of exception.

The United States ambassador to Peru, Lisa Kenna, has indicated that Washington "closely follows the political situation" in the country, while it has shown itself "prepared" to work with Peru to promote democracy, social inclusion and prosperity.

"In difficult times like these, we remain firm in our support for the Peruvian people and their representatives," he said, according to a statement.

"We call on the democratic institutions of Peru to continue working hand in hand with the new government in a constructive, inclusive and transparent manner, to bring peace to the Peruvian people," added Kenna.

The Castillo Executive has been overwhelmed by strong political pressure and investigations into alleged corruption against him since the start of his term in July 2021. The former president now remains in detention for the next seven days while the investigation against him continues for alleged crime of rebellion by the Prosecutor's Office.
