The UN raises the official count of civilian deaths in Ukraine to more than 7,000

The UN Office for Human Rights has already confirmed more than 7,000 civilian deaths in the context of the conflict unleashed in February 2022 by the military offensive launched by Russia on Ukraine, although it assumes that the real number of victims will be "considerably higher". .

The United Nations prepares its own count based on verified information and so far has evidence of 7,031 deaths, including 433 minors. In the first half of January alone, at least 388 civilians have lost their lives.

In addition, 11,327 people have been injured since the start of the offensive, 827 of whom are boys or girls. In this case, the number of injured includes 284 people who have suffered some type of damage from the conflict between January 1 and 15.

A large part of the victims correspond to the eastern part of Ukraine - in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions alone there are 9,853 dead or wounded - while most of the damage inflicted on civilians derives from the use of wide-range explosive weapons, for example missile launches or artillery shells.

The UN has admitted that it lacks information on areas where there has been "intense" fighting, such as the city of Mariupol, controlled by Russian forces. Likewise, it has clarified that it only includes in its report cases that it has been able to verify.
