The Supreme Court of Peru evaluates this Tuesday the provisional detention of Castillo for the crime of rebellion

MADRID, 13 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Supreme Court of Peru is evaluating this Tuesday the appeal filed by the defense of former President Pedro Castillo against his provisional detention for a period of seven days in the framework of the investigation against him for the alleged crime of rebellion after trying unsuccessfully to dissolve The congress.

The hearing is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. (local time) virtually, although Castillo's lawyer, Miguel Pérez Arroyo, has requested to appear in person and intervene to present allegations.

Castillo has been in pretrial detention since last Wednesday, December 7, when he was arrested by his own security team shortly after addressing the nation to announce the dissolution of Congress, the establishment of an emergency government and the calling of legislative elections with the than to be able to launch a new constitutional process afterwards.

Castillo's move, of which former prime ministers Aníbal Torres and Betssy Chávez were reportedly aware, was quickly intercepted by Congress, which approved his dismissal.

Since then, the protests against his arrest and in favor of closing down a Congress that from day one has maneuvered to remove him from office have followed one another, with a balance of seven deaths and a hundred injured among police officers and protesters. The new government of Dina Boluarte has called for dialogue and has convened a crisis cabinet to deal with the crisis.
